Hello my dear readers and fellow bloggers… as I mentioned, I want my blogs to be informative and somewhat in relation to what I had experienced and what I’m passionate about.  And so, I begin my informative blogs…

I had been a cadet in a prestigious academy here in the Philippines.  I’m with the class of 1999.  The cadet life was not easy… being in a military academy, what do you expect?  The first year was physically strenuous, exhausting and “rotting like hell”.  The second year, we’ll our body already adapted to pressure, however, the academics… whew… was really tough.  And then the third year… well for me, the pressure here was in your leadership… how you handle your underclass and being a role model to them (as they look up to you); and how you contribute in helping your first class handle the corps (as they expect you to do well as their successor).  The fourth year… well I haven’t reached that part… why? It’s a long story.  But hey, did I regret entering the academy and had I wasted 2 ½ years of my college life? Absolutely no… I learned a lot from my experience there and helped me in many ways… it’s truly an honor.  Then, did I regret going out of the academy?... I met my lovely wife, Ellinor, and I’ve got 2 beautiful kids, Rael and Justin… and I’m living my life to the fullest… what do you think?  No regret, what’s done is done.  God has a purpose for everything… and everything is all for HIS Glory.

Qualifications to be a PMA Cadet

Filipino Candidates

Ø  Natural Born Filipino Citizen

Ø  Single and never been married

Ø  Have never sired (male) nor given birth (female) to a child

Ø  5 feet 4 inches tall if male; 5 feet 2 inches tall if female

Ø  Not a day older than 22 years old and not a day younger than 17 years old on 01 April of the year following the date of the examination taken

Ø  Of good moral character

Ø  At least High School graduate with a general average of 85% or higher; for 4th year High School students, 3rd year general average of 85% or higher

Ø  Must pass the WRITTEN, PHYSICAL & NEURO-PSYCHIATRIC examinations

Ø  Able to perform the minimum requirements for Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

If accepted as a cadet in the Academy, you will become a full government scholar. As a cadet, you will also receive a monthly pay and various allowances to cover the cost of your expenses essential to your training.

You will be accepted as a cadet or plebe during a “reception” in the sacred Borromeo field of PMA on April 1. (Just an advice, it’s a military academy; a reception might mean differently, just expect for the worst. It’s April Fool’s Day after all)

Foreign Candidates

Non- Filipino candidates may be allowed to submit their applications and be selected as cadets to the Philippine Military Academy provided they satisfy the same basic requirements for Filipino cadets. The president of the Philippines is authorized to grant one foreign cadet per class for each foreign country maintaining diplomatic relations with the Republic of the Philippines. The following are the conditions for admission of a foreign cadet:

Ø  Their pay and allowances, per diems, and traveling expenses shall be borne by their country.

Ø  They will be subject to the same rules and regulations governing attendance, discipline, resignation, discharge, and graduation as Filipino cadets.

Ø  Foreign cadets will not be entitled to appointment to any office or position in the Armed Forces of the Philippines by reason of graduation from the Philippine Military Academy.

Ø  They will not take the oath of office upon admission and execute the engagement for service.

Ø  Foreign cadets usually take their own oath of office before the ambassador of their respective governments.

Ø  Foreign cadets shall take the PMA Entrance Examinations in their respective countries which shall be administered by the Defense and Armed Forces Attaches (DAFA) of the Philippines.

PHILIPPINE NATIONAL POLICE ACADEMY

Admission Requirements PNPA needs able, responsible and well-motivated youths who have the aptitude for service to meet the varied and challenging duties of a public safety service officer. A. Qualifications Ø  A natural born Filipino citizen; Ø  Of good moral character; Ø  Male or female, single and with no child or children; Ø  Not younger than 17 years old nor older than 21 years of age at the time of admission; Ø  Height of at least 162.5 cm (5ft 4 in) for male, and 157.5 cm (5ft 2 in) for female; Ø  Weight of not more or less than five (5) kilograms of the standard weight   measurement corresponding to height, age and sex; Ø  Must be able to perform the following physical fitness test; Exercises Male Female Pull-Ups 10   Full Arms Hanging   40 sec 2 mins Push-Ups 40 35 2 mins Sit-Ups 55 50 100 meter dash 17 sec 20 sec 1000 meter run 4:30 5:30     • Physically and mentally fit for cadetship training; • No criminal, administrative, civil cases on file before any Prosecutor’s Office or Court of Justice and other/or derogatory record(s); • Not a former cadet of PNPA or other service academies separated for cause(s) or by reason of resignation; • Must pass the Cadet Admission Test (CAT), general physical, neuro-psychiatry, medical, agility test and interview.

PHILIPPINE MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY

ADMISSIONS PROCEDURE

1.       Interested applicant who wishes to take the Entrance Examination should apply in person or through mail to the Committee on Admission, PMMA Complex, San Narciso, Zambales. Applicants by mail must fill-up the Application Form and mail it to:

2.       Only true and correct entries are accepted; any false information will be a ground for your disqualification.

3.       Applicants must choose his/her preferred testing center from the table of Testing Centers.

4.       FILING of APPLICATION. Applicants have two (2) options to file their application

• Personal – from January to September at PMMA Zambales only
• Mail – from January to First Week of September only

5.       FILING REQUIREMENTS:

•  4 copies of recent 2x2 colored pictures with nameplate, front view; white background
• Examination fee of three hundred fifty pesos (P350.00) in cash or postal money order payable to the PMMA Committee on Admissions (if application is filed through mail, only postal money order will be accepted);

• Certified true copy of Birth Certificate issued by the Civil Registrar; (Photocopy only)
• Note: Baptismal and Hospital Birth Certificates are not honored.
• 2 pcs. Self-addressed long white mailing envelopes with P30 worth of stamps per envelope

6.       EXAMINATIONS. The PMMA entrance examination (usually held in September) covers the following subjects/ areas:

• English
• Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Statistics and Trigonometry);
• Science (General Science, Chemistry & Physics)
• Abstract Reasoning

7.       SCREENING. Successful examinees of the Entrance Examination still have to undergo the following to qualify for admission:

• Neuro-Psychological Evaluation
• Pre-Medical

*  Height / Weight

*  Color Perception Test (ISHIHARA)

*  Snellens

*  Pre-Dental

• Laboratory Examinations
• Physical Examination

8.  ONE-MONTH ORIENTATION TRAINING. The Summer Orientation Training is a one-month indoctrination course where probationary midshipmen are quartered at the PMMA compound during the entire duration of the period. The “probies” are isolated from their families and friends and prohibited from entertaining visitors. 

     A hectic schedule consisting of military training, refresher course in Mathematics, English and introductory lectures in Navigation or Marine Engineering makes up the day of every “proby”.

Applicants who qualified for the One-month Orientation Training must report to the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy on the first day of May.

BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. Male or female, physically fit, natural born Filipino citizen/foreigner with study permit;
2. Single and never been married;
3. At least 16 but not more than 22 years old by June next year;
4. Height of at least 160 cm. (5 ft. 3 in.) weighs 55 kgs. (120 lbs.) stripped for male and 155 cm. (5 ft. 1 in.) weighs 50 kgs. (110 lbs.) stripped for female;
5. Free from being accused/convicted of any crime against the law and state;
6. At least a high school graduate qualified to enroll in a four-year course or graduating from high school on April next year;
7. At least earned average academic performance and preferably has taken Trigonometry in High School;
8. Applicants must have never been enrolled at PMMA.

GROUNDS FOR MEDICAL DISQUALIFICATION

            MEDICAL :

FOR MALE APPLICANTS:

1. Undescended testicles
2. Absence of one or both testicles
3. Suspicious enlargement of testis or epididymis
4. Varicocoele
5. Uncircumcised (must be circumcised before medical exam)
6. Height less than 5 ft & 3 inches

FOR FEMALE APPLICANTS:

7. History of childbirth/lactation
8. Pregnancy
9. Irregular menstrual cycle including menorrhagia
10. Dysmenorrhea,incapacitating to a degree which necessitates recurrent absences
11. Ovarian cyst, persistent and considered clinically significant
12. New growth of the external and internal gentalia, e. g. myoma of the uterus
13. Breastmass
14. Endomentriosis unless surgically eradicated or controlled
15. Cervicitis, acute or chronic
16. Generalized enlargement of the uterus due to any cause
17. Cervical polyps
18. Height: Less than 5 ft & 1 inches

FOR MALE AND FEMALE APPLICANTS:

19. Lordosis, kyphosis, scoliosis (thoracic & lumbar) regardless of angle
20. Bowlegged/knock kneed
21. Pes Planus (flat footed)
22. Arthritis, acute or subacute
23. Underweight or overweight. Applicants must have the ideal body weight one week prior to start of probationary period.
24. Severe skin diseases: bacterial, fungal or viral in nature. Excessive acne. Warts and all skin diseases must be cured prior to medical exam.
25. Leprosy in any forms
26. Tattoo/hypertropic tattoo scars causing disfigurement, extensive keloid scars specially in the facial area.
27. Gross physical deformity asymetry whether congenital due to trauma or disease including  extra or missing appendages (i.e. fingers)
28. Errors of refraction of eyes: near-sighted, far-sighted, astigmatism, cross-eyed and other ocular disorders.
29. Visual Acuity of >30/20 OU
30. Wearing contact lenses and eyeglasses
31. Color blindness/defective color perception (Ishihara- perfect for BSMT and 2 mistakes for BSME)
32. Deafness/perforated eardrum
33. Severe or chronic otitis media
34. Impacted cerumen (must be removed prior to medical exam)
35. Chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps
36. Hypertension, abnormal ECG tracings (e.g AV blocks, bundle branch blocks, ischemia, infarctions, arrhythmia tachycardia, bradycardia, etc.), heart abnormalities and diseases.
37. Active PTB, massive pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary infarctions, pneumonitis, bronchopneumonia, atelectasis and other lung diseases.
38. History of Asthma
39. Lymphadenopathy
40. Epilepsy, seizures, syncope and vertigo
41. Anemia and blood dyscracia
42. Hyperthyroidism (goiter) Hypothyroidism
43. Diabetes Mellitus
44. Hepatitis B whether active or inactive
45. Gallstones
46. Chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, duodenal ulcers and other GIT problems
47. History of major operations within the preceding 6 months
48. External/internal hemorrhoids and fissures, fistula-in-ano
49. Old or recent fractures wherein internal fixation plates, screws are left in place which may be easily subjected to trauma
50. Sexually transmitted diseases i.e HIV, gonorrhea & non-gonoccocal urethritis & syphilis
