Goodbye Birdie

I bought a Martinez (Crested Myna) bird for a pet just a couple of days ago and now it's gone.  I bought a cage for it which had sliding door and windows and it just took one mistake, by forgetting to clip the wire we made to secure one of the openings, for it to easily raise the unsecured window and fly away.  So it flew, flew away with whatever it cost me.

I was really dismayed when I was about to feed it and saw that the cage was empty this morning, for it's only been there for 3 days.  Now, I'm again left with an empty cage and as soon as my little boy finds out that the bird is gone, with a cellophane bag on his hand, he'll again ask me to catch birds with him... ha ha ha, now I find a need to buy a replacement just to fill up that empty cage and avoid being nagged about it, tsk 10x.  I just left the cage open for the meantime, maybe the bird will get hungry and be back for food... another wishful thinking... haha.

When I went to work, I  jokingly asked the one who sold the bird to me for refund, for giving me a bird trained to escape and go back to his previous owner.  We just laughed.  The down part was asking him again if I can buy another one.  I just hope he'll give me a discount for being an avid customer.

What lesson did I learn?  Never forget to secure the lock or be sure to buy a damn bird that would not try to escape if there is such... LOL.  Oh well, with what had happened, now I have something to write about and share, at least I have this as a consolation...

That was what I thought until I got home to clean the cage.  Sadly, I found the bird lifeless in the floor.  It was very active last night when I fed it, so I was really surprised.  I didn't notice it since the floor was a blind spot from where I'm looking at.  Maybe the bird got stressed from its travel and had not recovered.  Honestly, I would rather like to think that it escaped at least it's already free wherever it is... than finding out  that it's dead leaving me clueless of the cause. Yahweh bless.

  1. aaawww I am so sorry for your loss. The bird may have encountered a cat or other birds that caused it to stress and eventually pass. I had a friend who trained love birds before. It was kinda cool although she buys them as little as a few weeks old. But she can teach them to come, and even just stay on her shoulder no matter where she takes them. They do not have clipped wings and can fly whenever they want, but they choose not to. So to answer your question if you can get a bird that wouldnt escape... i guess the answer would be to get them young and train them too. =)

  2. The first one was free but the second one was a sad one since it didn't survive. Maybe it's not used to being alone.

  3. Sorry to hear about what happened to your pet. It can really be heartbreaking. I remember bringing home a stray kitten once. It was newly born, it couldn't even open its eyes yet. Despite me trying to feed it and care for it, I found it one day dead. Cried my eyes out for days because of it.

  4. I'm sorry for your loss, Ralph. Know what? We, too, have a crested myna bird named Tweety (very original, huh?) And I blogged about it, too, in my other blog. :D

  6. Sad, but if you really want to have birds in your backyards, put a bird seeds and water on a high area, then sooner or later birds will find and feed on them then fly free and may come back over and over.. :D

  7. My brother-in-law has the same case as you. He forgot to clip the wire to lock the bird's cage and it makes one bird escaped. He bought another because the bird left in the cage felt so strange and alone.

  11. the myna is a protected species ...sad that it is being sold in the market just like any other goods ... birds arent supposed to be in cage for human amusement .. they are like us built and made to be free ...

    1. ganun ba dennis, can you please give me a link that includes "martinez" as one of the protected species so i can tell it to all my friends having this bird as pet. thanks for this info.

i respect your insights, but for me, there are birds bred to be pets... while some are caged and taken cared of to avoid their extinction in the wild like the Philippine eagle... and different kinds of birds (both endangered and not) are in the zoos and amusement parks for kids and people to see and know them, both for amusement and education... Yahweh bless.

  12. Sad lessons are often the most memorable. Katherine Ann Porter famous short story writer once wrote in Downward Path to Wisdom that Learning is painful, and it definitely is.
